Clinical Compliance

Both the College of Health and our clinical partners require you to complete specific vaccinations and training before you can participate in clinical experiences. Failure to meet these requirements may significantly limit your placement options and, in some cases, could affect your ability to complete the clinical hours needed for your program.

Please keep in mind that compliance is not a one-time task. You are expected to maintain a compliant status throughout the entirety of your clinical experience—this includes renewing any vaccinations or trainings that expire while you are still in a clinical rotation.

The College of Health uses Exxat, a compliance management system that allows you to submit your health data for review and track your clinical experiences in real time. To ensure your compliance status is updated accurately, please follow the submission instructions for each requirement as outlined in your Exxat tracker.

College of Health Student Compliance Requirements

The College of Health has established health and immunization requirements to protect all CSU affiliates—faculty, staff, and students—when working with patients and clients in both on-campus and off-campus clinical and fieldwork settings. All affiliates must provide proof of the requirements outlined below.

In addition to these minimum standards, some clinical sites may require further testing, evaluation, treatment, or additional documentation—such as supplementary titers or vaccines. Affiliates are also expected to comply with any site-specific requirements that go beyond those of the department.

Please note that only accommodations formally granted by CSU's Office of Institutional Equity (for religious accommodations) or the Office of Disability Services (for medical accommodations)—and subsequently accepted by the clinical site—will be recognized.

Failure to complete these requirements in a timely manner may delay your clinical or fieldwork placement, potentially affecting your ability to progress in your program and graduate on time.

We strongly encourage you to review all requirements early and stay in close communication with your program coordinator to ensure a smooth path to placement.

CSU affiliates must provide documentation from a physician, health institution, or official education records of satisfactory immunization status for the following:

Poliomyelitis (Polio) Vaccine
Tetanus-Diphtheria Pertussis Toxoid
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
Hepatitis B
Tuberculosis Screening
Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

In accordance with Cleveland State University standards and the requirements of our clinical partners, students must also meet specific licensure and/or training obligations, including but not limited to the following:

FBI and BCI background checks (click here for instructions)
BLS or ACLS Healthcare Provider CPR certification through the American Heart Association
HIPPA training
Bloodborne Pathogen Training

Deadlines for each requirement are specific to your program. If you have unfulfilled requirements, you will be considered non-compliant and will be prohibited from participating in clinical education, fieldwork, or practicum experiences.

Clinical compliance refers to the process of ensuring that students, faculty, and staff meet all required health, safety, training, and legal standards before and during their participation in clinical or fieldwork experiences.

In healthcare education, it's the system that makes sure everyone is safe, qualified, and legally cleared to be in a patient-care environment.

Clinical compliance is important because it protects everyone involved—patients, students, faculty, and the university—and it is non-negotiable for gaining access to clinical sites. Without it, students cannot participate in clinical rotations, which means they cannot complete their programs or graduate.

The College of Health primarily uses Exxat and ACEMAPP to monitor student clinical compliance. Many of our clinical partners require the use of a specific compliance platform, and we utilize those systems to meet their expectations.

If your titer results show that you are not immune, or if a vaccination has expired, you will be required to obtain repeat titers and/or receive revaccination as needed. During this process, you are expected to take prompt action to complete the recommended follow-up.

Regarding your compliance status: you are generally considered compliant while in progress, as long as you have submitted your initial documentation and are actively following the instructions provided by your healthcare provider and the compliance team. However, you will not be marked as fully compliant or cleared for placement until all requirements are successfully met and verified in the system.

No. You cannot attend a clinical experience if your compliance profile is not fully compliant. Clinical sites require documented proof that all health, training, and background check requirements have been met before they will allow you to enter their facility. Without full compliance, you will not be cleared for placement.

If your profile shows missing, expired, or incomplete items, you should address them immediately. Once you have submitted the required documentation and it has been reviewed and approved by the compliance team, your status will be updated, and you will be cleared to attend your clinical experience.

No. The College of Health requires BLS or ACLS Healthcare Provider CPR certification specifically through the American Heart Association. Certifications from other providers, such as the American Red Cross, are not accepted. Please ensure you complete your certification through an AHA-authorized course before your clinical placement.
