Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy

The Cleveland State University Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Our comprehensive program is grounded in both the art and science of music therapy. Successful completion of coursework in music therapy courses (including internship) at CSU prepares candidates for eligibility to sit for the national board certification examination administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Once the exam is passed, the candidate receives the credential Music Therapist - Board Certified (MT-BC) and is eligible to practice as a music therapist.

As of July 1, 2024, to practice as a music therapist in Ohio, students must pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Music Therapist (LPMT). This state license is required to work as a music therapist or use the title "music therapist" professionally in Ohio.

CSU’s AMTA-approved music therapy program, combined with licensure, increases access to music therapy across healthcare and education settings. We would love to discuss how CSU can support your journey to becoming a licensed music therapist!

Board-certified music therapists work in various settings:

  • Hospitals and Medical Centers
  • Schools
  • Mental Health Settings and Psychiatric Facilities
  • Rehabilitation Centers
  • Hospice and Palliative Care
  • Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities
  • Private Practices and Community Health Centers
  • Correctional Facilities and Juvenile Detention Centers
