What are CEUs?

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are a recognized method of quantifying participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. One Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is defined as 10 contact hours (1 hour = 60 minutes). The primary purpose of CEUs is to provide a permanent record of the educational accomplishments of an individual who has completed significant non-credit educational and career enhancement activities. 

Certain professions require practitioners earn a specific number of CEUs per year to keep their certificates or licenses to practice, current, and to ensure they are up-to-date with current practices in their field. The number of credits required varies by state and profession. Proof of credits earned is necessary in order to renew a license to practice. Generally, certificates are issued as proof that a practitioner has completed the required continuing education units. 

As a provider of educational programs, Cleveland State University awards CEUs to program participants based on the following criteria: 

  • CSU has a system in place to identify learners who meet requirements for satisfactory CEU program completion and maintains a record for at least seven years of each learner's participation. 

  • CSU creates a learning environment and supplies support services appropriate to the stated continuing education learning objectives and outcomes. 

  • CSU's programs are planned in response to identified requests and needs of our participants. 

  • CSU provides clear written statements to the program participants of the intended learning objectives and outcomes of each program. 

  • CSU has qualified personnel involved in developing, planning and implementing programs. 

  • CSU’s content and instructional methods are appropriate for the learning outcomes of each activity. 

  • CSU evaluates each program after it has taken place in order to make continuous improvements.
